Clarkkent's frontman Jaakko spent his childhood listening to various American bands and felt the urge to form a band at the age of 10. After years of drumming and songwriting in different bands he met his new band mates while touring Finland. "We had known each other for years but we were kind of stuck in our old projects until my skatepunk band Epidemic fell apart. After that I just wanted to have a band where I could sing my own songs and play guitar." says Jaakko. The guys in the new band were Jaakko, Jukka, Jussi and Kusti. All from the same area in southern Finland. Clarkkent was born.
In 2008 Clarkkent had almost finished recording their debut album with producer Jonas Olsson (Disco Ensemble, Deep Insight) when Finnish label Sonic Kitchen (Killer Aspect, Sunrise Avenue) singed the band. The single "In My Arms" hit the radio immediately and was one of the most played and most wanted songs on YLEX (the nationwide Finnish radio station) for more than 20 weeks. The video for 2nd single "I.W.T.C.Y." was also on MTV Nordic and Voice. Anyone who has seen Clarkkent live knows that the guys love playing loud and very energetic shows. Due to the success of the debut album the band got the chance to rock the stage at festivals and as the opening act for huge international bands such as Shinedown and Biffy Clyro. It also made possible for Clarkkent to play shows and festivals abroad for example in Germany and Estonia.
After the release of "This Is Personal" (03/2009) it was obvious that the unique combination of great melodies and a rocking band was appealing to people from all ages. "We love it when people come to us and say they loved our show and the music we play. But it's even cooler when you know that you're making exactly the kind of music you want to make! Not all bands out there can honestly say that," Jaakko says.
In early 2010 Clarkkent started recording their untitled second album with Sonic Kitchen producer Aku Sinivalo. It soon became clear that the chemistry inside the band wasn't what it used to be. Clarkkent continued recording without Kusti and by the autumn of 2010 the bassist was no longer a member of the band. "It was a rough year for us all. We were a bit lost but continued recording anyway," Jaakko explains. Jukka adds "It was a 3 against 1 situation. It's no environment to survive in a band. But despite all that we recorded a lot of killer guitar tracks!".
While recording without a bassist Clarkkent became more convinced that a new member in the band just wouldn't work. Jaakko was up to the challenge and picked up the bass leaving Jukka to take care of all the guitars live. By that time the guitar recordings for the album were all done. "Well, we deleted a lot of guitar tracks to make it sound more like a trio. There's still a lot of Jaakko's playing on the album but for the live show we've rearranged all the songs for just one guitar. And I like it!" Jukka summarises. Jaakko laughs, "At the last minute we wrote new songs for the album as a trio without knowing that we actually were a trio! And those songs are the best ones!". Eventually the new trio ended up not proceeding with Sonic Kitchen, but with a new indie label, Johnny Get The Rifle.
Clarkkent decided to call their second album "Three". Not as the usual name for a third album but as a reference to the changes in the band. Clarkkent's new trio based sound with its rock and indie punk style guitars, solid rock drumming and rich pop vocals makes "Three" a compact in-your-face rock album. The release of Clarkkent's second album "Three" is scheduled for early 2012.
